Mr. Mahon Period 3 Social Studies

3-26-12
Today, we will be wrapping up our citations. You should have two citations for each body paragraph. Once you have these six citations (or more; it's a minimum), you should begin writing the topic sentences for each of the body paragraphs.

3-23-12
You should continue looking for evidence to support your thesis statement. Remember, you need a minimum of two citations from each chapter, and two citations to support each of your body paragraphs. That's a minimum of six citations total

3-22-12
PSSAs are over! Yeah!
Well, at least for a little while, but let's not worry about that now. Let's get back to our theses, shall we. If your thesis statement is not yet written, that needs to be remedied. Get your thesis statement written. Once that is done, you should begin collecting evidence. Got through Chapters 35-38 and look for statements that the author, Joy Hakim, makes that support what you are trying to say. Although I will accept supporting evidence from other chapters, you must have at least two things from within chapters 35-8. As a guideline, you want to make sure that body paragraph is supported by 2-3 pieces of evidence. They can be direct quotes or indirect quotes. For those few of you that may have already collected your data, you may begin writing your body sentences. Do not write your introductory paragraph yet, just the body paragraphs.

3-16-12
Great Job on the PSSAs!
We will continue working on your papers. By now you should have your thesis statement written, and you should have shown it to me. If this is not the case, then you need to get those two things done first. Once that is completed, you should begin writing your body paragraphs. Once this is completed, you need to start gathering your evidence. Read through chapters 35-38, and find appropriate examples of how the colonists were beginning to pull away from England. Try and organize the evidence you find in those chapters in such a way that you can group them together in one of the three body paragraphs you will be expected to write.

3-12-12
Today we will focus on writing a good thesis statement. Remember, the research question we are using to guide us through this assignment is: How did the American colonists begin to see themselves less as British subjects and more as Americans? Your thesis statement should sum up everything that you are trying to say in your paper. Please get your thesis statement approved by me.

3-9-12
We will begin going over the alternative assessment we will be doing for Ch 35-8. This will involve a 2 page paper. As PSSA's are beginning next week, all of the work for this evaluation will be completed in class (no time outside of class will be used to create your evaluation). I will review the parameters of the assignment in class.

3-8-12
We will review the questions for Ch 38. Then we will begin a research assignment based on our readings thus far. I will explain the central question that your papers will be exploring in class, and then post them to this site so that we all remain at the same stage of the writing process.

3-7-12
We will complete our review of the questions from Ch 37, and then begin reading Ch 38. After you read the selection, answer the following questions:
Ch 38
1. What problem did geography create for people living in New England?
2. What is subsistence farming?
3. What obstacles did the colonists encounter when it came to industry?
4. What were some of the ways that New Englanders made a living?
5. Describe the "triangular trade." What three points created the triangle? What goods were traded at each of those points?
6. Describe how slaves were captured.
7. What do you think about Olaudah's description of his journey into captivity? How does it make you feel?
8. By 1790, how many blacks are living in the North American colonies?

3-6-12
We will start class by handing in our Wanted Posters. I will get these graded and return them to you as soon as possible.
Afterwards, we will be reading Ch 37 out of the History of US. I ask that you answer the following questions:
Ch 37.
1. What does "divine right" mean as it relates to kings?
2. What do you think King James II did to get the people so upset that they overthrew him? Be specific.
3. What is the "Glorious Revolution?"
4. Once the revolution was over, how did the nature of Parliament change?
5. What do the colonists think of Parliament after this occurs?

We will review your answers prior to the end of class. I will check your work for completion.

3-5-12
You should have your Wanted Poster completed by the end of class today. Complete any finishing touches during class and hand it in to me. If you complete the assignment, begin reading Ch 37 in the History of US.

3-2-12
We will begin constructing our Wanted Pirate Posters today. Each one of you will be constructing your own poster individually. Your posters should include the following:
A) 2 Paragraphs of biography, describing the pirates misdeeds/crimes, where he/she operates, and who the victims of these actions were.
B) A picture of the Pirate (a wanted poster is not much good without a picture), as well as a physical description. (This portion of writing is separate from the biography mentioned above.
C) Your name should be on the back
D) Any other interesting graphics that you deem appropriate may be included (limit it to 3).
E) There should be a time-appropriate reward offered for capture.

If you have any questions, or require clarification, please let me know. My hope is that we can get this accomplished by the end of class today; but if more time is required, it will be provided on Monday.

3-1-12
We are going to review the Analysis Questions from Ch 36 that we did not get to yesterday. Then, you are going to go online and perform research about a pirate. Try to pick a pirate that interests you (there are a lot of different pirates out there). Start your search simply by doing a Google search of pirates in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Read through some of the descriptions that you find. Once you have found one that interests you, get it approved by me. Then, you are to start creating a wanted poster that lists who the pirate is, when he or she lived, and what crimes they are supposed to have committed. Include in your poster a short bio (1-2 paragraphs). We will be working on this assignment for the next two classes. Today should focus on the preliminary research and getting your topic approved.

2-29-12
Happy Leap Day
We will review the 4 questions from Ch 36.

2-28-12
We will review the answers from Ch 35's Analysis Questions. Then, we will begin reading Ch 36 and answer the following Analysis questions for that.
Ch 36
1. What type of people settled North Carolina and why?
2. Why did pirates spend time in North Carolina?
3. Why was there a small rebellion against England in 1677?
4. What are "pieces of eight?"

2-27-12
Today, we will be reading Chapter 35 in The History of US. You are to read the chapter silently and independently and answer the following questions:
Ch 35 Analysis Questions
1. What two things became the principle cash crops of the Carolinas early in their history?
2. What became the busiest port in the South?
3. Who went to live in that port town?
4. What impact did South Carolina's religious toleration have on its settlement?
5. What were some of the religious groups that settled in South Carolina?
6. What made South Carolina different from other souther colonies such as Virginia or North Carolina?
7. What is Gullah?

2-24-12
You will have five minutes at the beginning of class to study and ask any last minute questions. Afterwards, your test will be administered. Any time you have left should be spent reading silently. I will collect all of the tests at the same time, once EVERYONE is done. Please be courteous to one another and remain silent until ALL of the tests are collected. Have a great weekend.

2-23-12
You will be playing a review game in preparation for the test tomorrow.

2-22-12
You should finish up your journal entry on the life of an adolescent in the colonial south. You will be handing this assignment in for a grade.

2-21-12
We will be finishing the analysis questions for Ch 33, and then reviewing them. Afterwards, we will be getting started on Ch 34. You should start off by simply reading the chapter. Then, follow the directions below.

Ch 34
Read this chapter, and then write a diary entry imagining that you are an adolescent living in 18th century America.
You could imagine yourself to be an indentured servant, a farmer, a slave, the child of a skilled worker (such as silversmith or blacksmith), farmer, or wealthy landowner.
Try to give an idea of what everyday life would be like for that person--what activities would occupy your day? What would your dreams be? What would you like about your life? What would you dislike?
Your entry should be 100-200 words long. It should have an introduction, body, and conclusion.
Remember, you are writing a descriptive narrative, and should attempt to transport your reader into the life of your character.
Be creative. Do not simply re-create one of the stories relayed in chapter 34--try to imagine a unique story all your own.
But try to make it plausible (that means believable); your reader should feel that the story you have created is possible.
This assignment will be worth 20 points, and follow the standard writing rubric that Mr. Cunningham uses.

2-16-12
We will complete our review of Ch 32, and then get started on the analysis questions of Ch 33, which can be found below.

2-15-12
We will start today by reviewing the questions from Ch 31 & 32 which was assigned yesterday for homework.
After this review, we will begin answer the questions for Ch 33, found below.

Ch 33

2. When Francis Nicholson planned the town, what did it end up looking like?
3. What happened to Williamsburg when the House of Burgesses is in session?
4. Who was the Reverend Blair and what was he like?
5. What problem are the Founding Fathers dealing with when they are in Raleigh's Tavern?
